3 April 11 Su Chat Meeting on Google Docs
Amidst a profusion of apologies all around for being late to the chat a brief discussion of the brochure was made, a mention of Katie posting the philosophy statement, and setting the next chat meeting for 10 Apr 11 Su 4 pm on Google Docs. We will check email and wiki discussion for updates on work done throughout the week.
March 16 - March 25
Rubric: Text: Elevator Speech: The group brainstormed content and collaboratively developed an inspired elevator speech using the guidelines and ample. The writing is engaging and reinforces the school librarian’s role in student achievement.
Elevator Speech: 1st draft:
Are you a busy teacher? Of course you are…all teachers work extremely hard every day. I was a classroom teacher myself for 15 11 (the only reason I changed this is because at 35 years old she would have less years teaching experience if she has also been a librarian for at least a couple years. Aida, I think the change to 11 years makes sense. Good catch on that one) years before becoming your school librarian, and I would like to make your teaching experience less overwhelming by partnering with you to plan, co-teach, implement technology, and/or assess whatever curriculum content lessons you desire. I’m knowledgeable about the TEKS, and many inquiry processes and strategies that will create a meaningful, engaging framework to your projects. Through our collaboration, I can reduce your student-teacher ratio in half, introduce exciting new technology formats to your students, such as Web 2.0 tools, and help you lead your students to academic success as well as prepare them for a life of learning(Aida, Melissa, what about saying "while preparing them for life-long learning"? That way we shave off a few words but keep the content.) I even help create useful rubrics for assessments that can really save time spent grading. If you are ready to reduce your workload, and want your students participating in an enjoyable, authentic learning environment...let’s collaborate! I’m eager to begin a partnership with you! (Melissa, Aida, I am going to copy and paste this elevator speech to the Home Page, so we can use the Discussion Tabs on that page for more revisions on this).
This version has lower case letters, which is exactly like the ALA's examples. I also placed "@ your library" on only one book so that it is absolutely acceptable to the ALA. I also added the ® at the end. March 25, 2011, Friday 7:30 pm chat summary:

A couple of things discussed: 3. Continue thinking about logo (PPT said logo should look as good in black and white as color) 4. Leave Voki introduction open for continual revision
Collaboration for Week of Feb. 28-Mar. 6
Voki Intro Possibilities: Hello. I’m Hypatia Opal Dimple, librarian at Theon Elementary School in Alexandria, Texas. When we work together we help our students become lifelong readers and learners. Let’s discuss ways that we can engage our students in a way that is meaningful to them and ensuring that reading is bound to happen.
I like this a lot, you've used words that are really important for our Voki to contain. Here's just a slight rewording idea: Hello. I’m Hypatia Opal Dimple, librarian at Theon Elementary School in Alexandria, Texas. When we work together, reading is bound to happen(I'm italicizing this since to draw emphasis to the fact that it's our slogan), and our students will become lifelong readers and learners. Let's discuss how ways{delete ways since we have it later on in the sentence and it sounds repetitive with it twice in one sentence and replace with how] we can engage our students in a way that is meaningful to them and will lead them down the path (or road) to [to] success. (The last part I added on the tail end may be a bit too trite/cliche. I will survive if you do not like it ;)
Good job on the voki intros; I'm going to add in a few possible revisions.
Elevator Speech Possibilities:
Collaborations for Week of Feb. 21-Feb. 27
I made this with Microsoft Paint. What do you ya'll think? I can make it larger or smaller if needed.I like it. Is it possible to use more primary (bright) colors? The concept and sizes are great in my opinion, but I think vivid colors would be better (like red, blue, green, purple, yellow--but brighter shades). If it is not possible, this will work! I do like this slogan. This is great! I agree about the colors, though. Brighter colors would look better, maybe jewel tones. Also, we need to included the registered trademark symbol at the end of "library". Just to make sure we are using this registered symbol correctly I looked to see what ALA had to say at this webpage: http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/advocacy/publicawareness/campaign@yourlibrary/downloadlogos/yourlibrary.cfm This other page is for ways to make the registered trademark symbol:http://www.newradiance.com/keyboardbulletsandsymbols.htm . There may be better pages but this one offers three methods to do it. As it is, we may not need the the methods to make the symbol if we make use of the free downloads available as mentioned at the bottom of the ALA page. Also, I think we need to make the books horizontal if only because the @ your library has to following the registered format besides the font. I'm not sure. What do you think?
@your library® is a registered trademark of the American Library Association Oooohhhh. Purty. I was thinking, since reading is part of literacy and there is more of literacy we want to emphasize in our collaboration with teachers and working with students, should we change "reading" to "literacy"? I like literacy. I think literacy is geared more towards older people and not kids though. I think kids will respond more to "reading," but literacy is really what we are talking about. I like the color changes below. The only thing is we may need to lighten up the purple to make the word Library stand out, or we could put library in a white font or yellow? That would solve the problem. Is that possible? i also think making the books horizontal is a good idea. Is there a way to do it so they are not stacked exactly but a little skewed? For some reason, those anchors made my text go black, so I had to delete one and move one in order to get it pink again. Weird. Ok, here is my latest and I think final attempt. I do like the brighter colors. I cannot get the books skewed. If you all know how:go for it. I prefer "Reading" instead of literacy. Dr. M. has the citation under her slogan on her example, so I think this is fine. Melissa, I like it! Thanks for fixing the dark purple and stacking the books. As far as skewed, I have no clue how to do it either. I like what you did. I don't know either but this is great. Does the "@ your library" have a space between "@" and "your"?

Thursday, Feb. 24: See Discussion tab for Collaborative Chat held 7:15 pm, Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011 on Google Docs. Group met on Google Doc chatboard and came up with the following:
Instructional Level of Librarian: Elementary School Name & Location: Theon Elementary & Alexandria, TX Slogan for Library: ReadingIsBoundToHappen@YourLibrary Librarian's Name: Hypatia Opal Dimple
Next Meeting: Sunday, Feb. 27 @ 8:30 pm to discuss personal content portion of assignment.
Hi Guys, I added the outline below and maybe we could write our ideas beside each one as we think of things. What do you think? Katie I love it Katie! Great idea!
Instructional Level of Librarian: Elementary
Librarian's Name: I am just going to throw out some ideas. First, I thought, maybe we should make our librarian a guy instead of a girl since guys are so few in the librarian field. That is one idea I will throw out. Then, I had the chance to look through some 1920s/21 yearbooks at my Practicum site, and I thought the names back then were different, interesting, so I jotted a whole bunch down for possibilities to mix and match together or with your ideas. Here they are: Eloise Bennet Dimple Cromwell (Isn't Dimple a funny, cute name?) Dimple Culpepper Lucille Gray Verilyn Merrit Alton Lucille Neblett Milford Copeland McInty Sara Winter Grace Poole Annie Claire Oliver Vallie Eoff Olive Beauchamp Blanche Hightower Artie McMahon Velma Jackson Addlean Smith Almabelle Allison Zinna Moore (I like Zinna) Knox Crabtree Leta Yarbrough Alice Saunders Edith Brittain Marjoire Neblett Shasta Daisy (a type of flower) Homer Danner Hancock Hendrix Blackstone Matheny Prentiss Young Loma Blankenship Lucille Poe Coralie Lockhart Annabeth Virginia Ann Wolfe Maxwell Blackaby Craddock Scrimshire Josephine Arendell Iola Cumbie Louise Motherby Opal Bessomy Bellomy
School Name & Location: Theon Elementary/Alexandria, TX Slogan for Library (Under Negotiation): Read,Laugh,&Learn@YourLibrary Read4Fun&Knowledge@YourLibrary ReadingIsBoundToHappen@YourLibrary
Librarian's Name: (Under Negotiation): Agreed: Hypatia Opal Dimple Hypatia Alexandra Theondaughter (sorry ladies, I had to put it in)
Google Docs Chat: 4:30pm, Feb. 19, 2011 (It cut our names off for some reason; I tried twice to fix it) I think it is okay if it did that. You can still tell that we collaborated.
aal4me2:I'm going through what's posted here for the mini deadlines.hickeyk73:I had pasted in a snapshot of the rest of teh school year's assignments for this class.I also listed below the calendar things from the assignment and rubric that we need to consider.aal4me2:Out of curiosity, does my name appear as aal4me2?hickeyk73:I am thinking we can plan next week for sure, but loosely plan some of the other stuff. I don't know that I will fully understand it all until the semester progresses. What do you both think?Yes, it idoes. Is that okay?me:I'm good with next weekwill you all be traveling over spring break?aal4me2:So am I, only on Sat I have a wedding anniversary party to go to at 5:00 pm. So what time should we confer?hickeyk73:Based on the assignment list below this calendar (that I pulled from our asg. sheet), we need to settle on our instrucitonal level and slogan/motto (but it will be tentative)me:what grades do we want to cover in elementary?hickeyk73:I won't be traveling over spring break, so I can work that week if we need to.me:good, I'll be home toohickeyk73:Well, she says to "determine the instructional level of the school (elementary, middle, or high school)" so maybe we just need to say elementary, which seems so simple.aal4me2:We can choose grades? That's what I thought.me:ok, just elementary is fine.hickeyk73:Maybe you are right. I didn't know for sure.Maybe we should find out for sure. I almost think it is just elementary because the librarian would serve all the students, right?Again, we should double-check.me:different elementary campuses serve different gradeshickeyk73:We should also add our ideas this week about possible slogans. That will satisfy the rubric requirement for this week.me:I would only want to specify grade levels if we had to, or to make our project easierhickeyk73:By the way, I added into the calendar when the Final Exam Portfolio is due because I have to get that done, and that week's going to be a bear for me. I may not be able to do as much as I would like that week on this assignment.aal4me2:The rubric says: "Partners find each other in O.D.1.4 and negotiate a wiki space, post the URL to BBW, and begin their wiki collaboration in Module 2.2 as evidencec by the wiki planning page history including: insturctional level determined and slogan under negotiations."me:that's fine Katie, why don't we each post 3 slogan ideashickeyk73:Yep, we have done everyting but determine instructional level and negotiate slogans.me:and then vote for our favoriteand make comments to change them up a bithickeyk73:Maybe we can also tweak or evolve it as time goes on--my creativity takes time to get going. But yeah, I will come up with something by next Saturday. (Is that okay?)aal4me2:I want to be careful of when we do those portions specified for Module 2.2 having lost 5 points on the first assignment for starting late according to the record on the wiki. So, working on this during this coming week works grand for me. What time shall we meet on Sat.?hickeyk73:Aida, Great idea. I think we need to adhere very closely to the rubric on this. So we definitely need to show we worked on the wiki next week, and then show interaction each week--I think to show that we are collaborating.me:yes, sounds good. I definitely want everything to be on timehickeyk73:I have to a baby shower for a relative at 3:30 next week. I can meet in the morningOr in the evening.me:either time is good for mehickeyk73:And I'm thinking we can work asynchronously throughout the week if we so choose. I will check every day at least once to see discussion posts. But then come together saturday for a group mtg.aal4me2:I have the anniversary party at 5:30 pmand probably won't be back until after 8:30 pm. In the morning I have a meeting.hickeyk73:Would Friday be a better day to meet?Like in the evening?Or Thursday evening?aal4me2:I'm available Friday and Thursday starting at 7 pmme:evenings are good for me toohickeyk73:Okay, shall we meet Thursday at 7 pm then?aal4me2:Sounds good to me.me:sounds good to me toohickeyk73:Great, I just added that to our calendar.Do you guys want to plan any more, or just look over what I pulled out from the rubrics and assignment sheet and plan more next week?Oh, I have a question. Melissa, how did you get your wiki to be a different color?aal4me2:Q: do we attach a link to this google doc in the wiki or are we using this just for our own benefit?hickeyk73:I can copy and paste in this conversation and the calendar.me:Do you mean my green WIKI format?hickeyk73:The only thing is that we should update the calendar from here. And then cut the old one and repaste the new one in order to have the highlights and stuff.Since our wiki does not accept highlights.I mean allow highlights.Melissa, is yours green? I thought it was blue.I have a bad memory.me:oops...lol...yours is green...\mine is blueI choose a template somehowhickeyk73:I couldn't figure out how to change, and I think I need to upgrade or something.aal4me2:And how do you choose the color here?me:I'll go back and look and email youhickeyk73:Thanks. Aida, do you like the Google docs? I think it will be good for when we work synchronously.aal4me2:This is neat-O.me::)I agreehickeyk73:I am glad you like it. There are some quirks and sometimes cursor issues, but mostly, I find it great because we can all work on the document at the same time.Plus the chat!aal4me2:Another great tool for my kit.hickeyk73:CoolJust out of curiosity. what color is my cursor/me:Do you want me to cut and paste our chatting? Or were you doing it Katie?hickeyk73:Melissa, If you want to do it that would be great, and I can do the calendar in the planning section.I mean the timelineI think the chat can go into the planning section underneath the bar with a date.me:I'd be glad to since you did all this on here for us!ok...I will do that!hickeyk73:Great.me:ok...see you all later...I'll get this on the wiki now.hickeyk73:Thanks MelissaBye!aal4me2:Bye Melissa.

Aida, Melissa, This looks good for now, and we can change it as we gain more understanding. I do know that she said this on #3 of the first page of the assignment that will "Create at least THREE pages, one for each page of the final Pioneer School Library wiki project." So based on that sentence, I would say we can have planning pages and timelines and such. Yes, that's the way I'm understanding it too. We just have to have the actual project on the first three (or more) pages.

I am just going to throw out some ideas. Here they are:

(It cut our names off for some reason; I tried twice to fix it) I think it is okay if it did that. You can still tell that we collaborated.
aal4me2: I'm going through what's posted here for the mini deadlines.hickeyk73: I had pasted in a snapshot of the rest of teh school year's assignments for this class.I also listed below the calendar things from the assignment and rubric that we need to consider.aal4me2: Out of curiosity, does my name appear as aal4me2?hickeyk73: I am thinking we can plan next week for sure, but loosely plan some of the other stuff. I don't know that I will fully understand it all until the semester progresses. What do you both think?Yes, it idoes. Is that okay?me: I'm good with next weekwill you all be traveling over spring break?aal4me2: So am I, only on Sat I have a wedding anniversary party to go to at 5:00 pm. So what time should we confer?hickeyk73: Based on the assignment list below this calendar (that I pulled from our asg. sheet), we need to settle on our instrucitonal level and slogan/motto (but it will be tentative)me: what grades do we want to cover in elementary?hickeyk73: I won't be traveling over spring break, so I can work that week if we need to.me: good, I'll be home toohickeyk73: Well, she says to "determine the instructional level of the school (elementary, middle, or high school)" so maybe we just need to say elementary, which seems so simple.aal4me2: We can choose grades? That's what I thought.me: ok, just elementary is fine.hickeyk73: Maybe you are right. I didn't know for sure.Maybe we should find out for sure. I almost think it is just elementary because the librarian would serve all the students, right?Again, we should double-check.me: different elementary campuses serve different gradeshickeyk73: We should also add our ideas this week about possible slogans. That will satisfy the rubric requirement for this week.me: I would only want to specify grade levels if we had to, or to make our project easierhickeyk73: By the way, I added into the calendar when the Final Exam Portfolio is due because I have to get that done, and that week's going to be a bear for me. I may not be able to do as much as I would like that week on this assignment.aal4me2: The rubric says: "Partners find each other in O.D.1.4 and negotiate a wiki space, post the URL to BBW, and begin their wiki collaboration in Module 2.2 as evidencec by the wiki planning page history including: insturctional level determined and slogan under negotiations."me: that's fine Katie, why don't we each post 3 slogan ideashickeyk73: Yep, we have done everyting but determine instructional level and negotiate slogans.me: and then vote for our favoriteand make comments to change them up a bithickeyk73: Maybe we can also tweak or evolve it as time goes on--my creativity takes time to get going. But yeah, I will come up with something by next Saturday. (Is that okay?)aal4me2: I want to be careful of when we do those portions specified for Module 2.2 having lost 5 points on the first assignment for starting late according to the record on the wiki. So, working on this during this coming week works grand for me. What time shall we meet on Sat.?hickeyk73: Aida, Great idea. I think we need to adhere very closely to the rubric on this. So we definitely need to show we worked on the wiki next week, and then show interaction each week--I think to show that we are collaborating.me: yes, sounds good. I definitely want everything to be on timehickeyk73: I have to a baby shower for a relative at 3:30 next week. I can meet in the morningOr in the evening.me: either time is good for mehickeyk73: And I'm thinking we can work asynchronously throughout the week if we so choose. I will check every day at least once to see discussion posts. But then come together saturday for a group mtg.aal4me2: I have the anniversary party at 5:30 pmand probably won't be back until after 8:30 pm. In the morning I have a meeting.hickeyk73: Would Friday be a better day to meet?Like in the evening?Or Thursday evening?aal4me2: I'm available Friday and Thursday starting at 7 pmme: evenings are good for me toohickeyk73: Okay, shall we meet Thursday at 7 pm then?aal4me2: Sounds good to me.me: sounds good to me toohickeyk73: Great, I just added that to our calendar.Do you guys want to plan any more, or just look over what I pulled out from the rubrics and assignment sheet and plan more next week?Oh, I have a question. Melissa, how did you get your wiki to be a different color?aal4me2: Q: do we attach a link to this google doc in the wiki or are we using this just for our own benefit?hickeyk73: I can copy and paste in this conversation and the calendar.me: Do you mean my green WIKI format?hickeyk73: The only thing is that we should update the calendar from here. And then cut the old one and repaste the new one in order to have the highlights and stuff.Since our wiki does not accept highlights.I mean allow highlights.Melissa, is yours green? I thought it was blue.I have a bad memory.me: oops...lol...yours is green...\mine is blueI choose a template somehowhickeyk73: I couldn't figure out how to change, and I think I need to upgrade or something.aal4me2: And how do you choose the color here?me: I'll go back and look and email youhickeyk73: Thanks. Aida, do you like the Google docs? I think it will be good for when we work synchronously.aal4me2: This is neat-O.me: :)I agreehickeyk73: I am glad you like it. There are some quirks and sometimes cursor issues, but mostly, I find it great because we can all work on the document at the same time.Plus the chat!aal4me2: Another great tool for my kit.hickeyk73: CoolJust out of curiosity. what color is my cursor/me: Do you want me to cut and paste our chatting? Or were you doing it Katie?hickeyk73: Melissa, If you want to do it that would be great, and I can do the calendar in the planning section.I mean the timelineI think the chat can go into the planning section underneath the bar with a date.me: I'd be glad to since you did all this on here for us!ok...I will do that!hickeyk73: Great.me: ok...see you all later...I'll get this on the wiki now.hickeyk73: Thanks MelissaBye!aal4me2: Bye Melissa.
